I bought this XV-DV656 Pioneer DVD/CD Receiver about a year and a half ago for RM 1500 which is around USD$ 430. The entire system comes with the player, 1 middle speaker which serves as the subwoofer and 4 tall speakers each standing around 1 metre high.

The surround sound system is actually quite good especially when playing DVD movies such as Black Hawk Down. Unfortunately, this system does not have HD-enabled sound system since it is considered as an old system. But for playing CD and DVD,

it does provide very good sound quality.

As for the player, it allows you to play DVD, CD, MP3 files and also allows you to plug in a USB thumb drive. This player, even though it is not using the latest technology, is DIVX-enabled which means you can play most AVI video files. I’ve tried it and it works fine for videos with low to medium frame rate. Videos with very high frame rate will actually slow down a bit. It also depends on the quality of codec used ...

      • to create those video files.

The design of the player is quite slick with grey top and black glass like surface on the lower half of the player. The size of the player is not too big, around 60cm wide, 40-50cm long and around 8cm high. The subwoofer is quite small, but packs a punch. As for the 4 tall speakers, they are all very nicely designed in pure black.

Overall, I’m quite satisfied with this player since it can play almost all types of CD, VCD and DVD. The

remote controller is also very useful but mine broke down slightly after 1 year. The warranty period has expired and I was forced to pay RM 50 for a new one. Other than that, this player and the surround system are efficient, provide superb sound quality, can play most media types (except for Blu-ray), and price is reasonable. Furthermore, this is Pioneer we’re talking about, one of the best brands for sound system. I will recommend this for those who are looking for low to medium ranged surround system.
