Hindi Movie : Rang De Basanti. Theme : Story about youth of India today and the Indian revolutionaries of pre-Independence. The initial differences and the final similarities in both. Director : Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra Music : A R Rahman Starring : Alice Patten (Sue), Aamir Khan (DJ), Madhavan (Flt. Lt.

Ajay Rathod), Soha Ali Khan (Sonia), Siddharth (Karan), Sharman Joshi (Sukhi), Atul Kulakarni (Laxman Pandey). A young London based film maker Sue, inspired by the diaries of her grand father, who served in British police in India during Indian freedom struggle comes down to India to make a documentary on the Indian revolutionaries of pre-Independence mentioned in the diary. There

she casts a group of five friends to play the roles of these revolutionaries. But the youngsters of modern India initially refuse to be part of this project as they don’t match them with these characters from the past.

To them issues like patriotism is just text book stuff which has no value anymore. But on the way of acting in this film, the directionless students are absorbed with a sense of responsibility towards their country. The group consists of DJ-a fun loving, extrovert and the life of the gang, Karan-Rich, quiet and has a lonely life, Sukhi-fun loving, talkative and has a child like innocence, Aslam-a Muslim, is beyond the barriers of religion and Sonia - an optimist, simple Indian beauty. • has generous amount of patriotism is Flt.

Lt. Ajay Rathod, who is Sonia’s love also. Laxman Pandey, whom society considers as an extremist joins this gang later. Though initially he had strong belief in going against western culture in India, lately realizes that the true meaning of patriotism is not just going against western culture.

In the second half of the movie, when Flt. Lt. Ajay Rathod dies in the poor quality MIG airplane crash, the defense minister instead of admitting his blunder about the poor quality of MIG planes calls the talented Flt. Lt.

as irresponsible pilot. Then DJ and his gang kills the defense minister which equivalent to assassination of Saunders by Bhagath Singh in the past. And finally the group accepting its crime without any guilt in

a radio station is akin to Bhagat Singh surredendering to the British in the parliament. Both had the intention of conveying the message to the public.

The parallel drawn between the freedom fighters and DJ and his group is remarkable. “No country is perfect. it needs to be made perfect” voices a character in the end. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra deserves full praise for making a perfect movie, which is not just another film on “fight-against-system” but also about the modern youth who have lost hopes about their country, realizes that to make the country perfect, we should take the initiative rather than waiting for others to do something.

There is no single dull moment in the movie. Movie is full of emotions, fun and messages to youth. Music by Rahaman is excellent and matching with the situation.
