To Kill A King with Tim Roth and Dougray Scott. This story is a historic narration of the rise to power of Oliver Cromwell. Tim Roth plays the part of the complex character in such a way that we can see into his soul.

Is he the noble savior of England against the atrocities of the King or a power hungry usurper who would go to any lengths to rule England?

The movie takes place in England in 1645. In

the opening scene we are exposed to the gruesome casualties of this revolution by watching the piling up of dead bodies.

One body moves and we wonder the significance as this survivor is saved. Well, there is none as I saw no follow up of this scene.

The rest of the movie is so dull that I wanted to poke my eyes out. There is little fighting action scenes and a lot of blah, blah, blah.

It looks like a history channel documentary. There is ...

      • a discussion of the political issues involved with dethroning the King of England and going to a purely Parliamentary system.

Scott is General Fairfax who is big and strong. Roth plays the weak yet fearless Cromwell who admires Fairfax.

Fairfax’s wife betrays his love for her because she does not believe in the cause. She convinces him to turn his back on Cromwell.

There is one powerful scene that I did feel said it all. Why should one man hold power over a nation?

Because he is born to it.

” After Cromwell tried and failed, England did revert back to a monarch system, but that is another story. I think that the theme of the movie offered a lot of grand potential, but the budget held it back.

It was sorely lacking in Mel Gibson type energy and Tim Roth has never been a tough guy in my eyes. So, if you are a history buff and cannot sleep at night, then this is the movie for you.

Otherwise, it is well worth avoiding.
