A Bronx Tale with Chazz Palminteri, Robert De Niro, and Lillo Brancato. Great casting Put a bunch of Italians in roles of Italians in New York with their distinct accents and you pretty much are assured of getting a winner movie. Palminteri either plays a tough guy or a baboon.

In this case, he was the perfect choice as Sonny, who is the neighborhood mafia leader in the 60’s. Hats off to De Niro for turning

a minor role of the bus driving father into a powerful foil for the street pressure to be corrupt.

Newcomer Brancato did a great job as his son C and we enjoy the telling of this tale in his voice. Being an Italian growing up in New Jersey in those times, I can relate to the characters and truly enjoyed this movie.

Sonny befriends young C when the boy refuses to testify to a crime to the cops when pressured. Though his father is against their relationship, C respects Sonny more than his father and follows his advice in life.

There are many memorable scenes, but there are a few in particular that I want to share. There was the colorful description of each gangster as C explains how they acquired their nick names.

It reminded me how people tend to live up to their nick names as if unable to stop the compulsion. Then there was the scenes when a gang ...

of tough bikers invade the neighborhood and proceed to break up the local bar.

It was hilarious to see a bunch of fat old men wield baseball bats and use their stomachs to destroy this gang. I loved it.

Still, the best scene of all was the test of whether or not a girl is the one for you. Sonny tells C that first you open the car door for her.

Then as you walk around to the driver’s side if

she reaches over to unlock your door, she is the one. So C is dating a black girl, which was unheard of in those days.

When she passes the test we could feel the emotional leap for joy that C felt and how he could not wait to tell Sonny that she was one of the great ones. At the end of the movie we are left with two pearls of wisdom.

“Learn to give love and get love,” and “Never waste talent. ” I loved this movie.
