“Somewhere in a secret location in South London. ” - well, at least if you are not familiar with the area, to find the House of Magic can be a bit tricky (it’s in the back of Kennington underground station, on 9 Chapter Road, for those who do), but that just adds to the mystery… Founded by magician Simon Drake, who also lives in the former Victorian pub, the House of Magic is a real treat for anyone with a penchant for some mildly gothic, magic and funny entertainment.

The standard evening starts with the arrival by walk through the secret garden with lots of spooky effects and beautiful lighting / atmosphere including smoke screens and a headless butler.

Once inside, the ‘red room’ offers many different treats and surprises - such as the
whispering chair (fortune-telling), haunted cellar tours (led by the positeively charming and hilarious vampire), as well as lots of original rarities collected by the owner over many years, including a gothic inspired pinball machine and many other ‘twisted’ machines and games, such as magic mirrors, singing skeletons and the like.

Dinner is served around 8pm and the bar is open throughout the evening (the food is spectacular, by the way, especially if you leave room for the fruit crumble dessert).

during the dinner, we are allowed to wander around to the upstairs drawing room (also actually Simon’s private living room, which actually makes its atmosphere even more mysterious and cosy at the same time), decorated with more curiosities and visited throughout the evening by tarot readers, sleight-of-hand magicians and the like.

      At this ...

      • rate, the evening was already hugely enjoyable with the main act still to come!

Around 10pm the show starts and it’s certainly worth the wait.

even if you are a repeated guest of this establishment, both warm-up act and the show itself always changes slightly, so there is always something new and surprising and the magic tricks are really well-executed and breath-taking! (including the obligatory audience involvement where no limbs are spared!) but I wouldn’t want to spoil the fun by giving too much away, suffice to say, the evening ends in dancing till 1am, so plenty of time to talk after the show, and the master himself is always vey happy to chat to guests before and after the show and give them a private tour around the house and its stories (it really is haunted apparently, if you’re into that sort of thing).

obviously, this is also a chance to try out some more outrageous clothing or disguises (always welcome although definitely not a must), not just for Halloween (that special night is always a delight at the House of Magic, as everyone seems to make an extra effort and the surroundings are just so perfect).

overall, whether for a birthday surprise (they do supply the number for traditional cabs where you’ll be blindfolded and driven to and from the venue in an oldtimer cab), office party (they do corporate nights, too, so a good one for christmas or leaving do’s) or just a good night out with spouse / friends etc, it’s a real treat and a very rounded evening, as long as you enjoy a bit of twisted humour!
