Gareeb Rath is the recently introduced air conditioned train in India. The train was first introduced a couple of years back and presently it connects various cities across India with metros like Delhi and Mumbai. The name literally means ‘poor man’s chariot’.

I happened to travel in the newly introduced Gareeb Rath connecting Kochuveli, the satellite terminal of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with Lokmanya Tilak in

Mumbai in its first journey. We boarded the train from Ernakulam town where it reaches by 1PM. The most striking feature of Gareeb Rath is that it is a fully air conditioned train but the rates are much less than two and three tier air conditioned coaches in normal trains. The train is easily identified by its green and yellow colors. The train has ...

      • three tier and chair car accommodations. The sleeper coaches are different from that of other trains and can accommodate more passengers. The food is also good.

The train is very fast and will cover the Mangala Superfast Express that goes ahead of this midway. It has very few stops. Starting from Kochuveli it will stop only at Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Shoranur, Kozhikode, Kannur,

the recently approved stop at Kasaragod and Mangalore. Then it goes through Goa and Ratnagiri and will reach Panvel and will terminate at Lokmanya Tilak. The train has become very popular with passengers traveling between Mumbai and Kerala and also for tourists visiting Goa and Kerala. It costs just around INR 750 for sleeper and 650 for chair car between Mumbai and Kochi in Gareeb Rath.
