  • Just minutes after going through the entrance to the park, you're walking purposely much like a possessed dog for Fantasyland with the mission in mind that you know you'll regret later because of that damn song
  • If everybody was flashing their cameras, it would probably make the experience more annoying than enjoyable
  • I know it's tempting because the ride is so vibrant and colorful and they recently refurbished it so it's all bright and new again

When you visit the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World, FL, you must make a point of checking out the classic ride “It’s a Small World”. As much as the song plays in your head for the next week and a half, you can’t hardly help yourself. Just minutes after going through the entrance to the park, you’re walking purposely much like a possessed dog for Fantasyland with the mission in mind that you know you’ll regret later because of that damn song. Yup, there you are in the queue waiting for your turn to ride in one of those colorful boats that takes you into “It’s a Small World”.

It’s basically this boat ride that goes through the water that is supposed to be like down a river. Well as you go along, you are going through “The World” and you are seeing children

of all colors and ethnicities and they are doing different things. Some are dancing. Some are playing. Some are singing. Some are on Ferris Wheels, Some are playing instruments. Some are…..well you get the general idea. In all there are over 300 Audio-Animatronic dolls in “It’s a Small World”.

The song that is played as you go through this attraction is “It’s a Small World”. It’s a sing songy kind of tune that is sung in rounds and to make matters worse or better as you see it, it’s sang in different languages depending on what part of the “world” you happen to be traversing in! It’s sung in English, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Swedish! By the time you get off this ride, which is about 15 minutes long, the song and tune are imbedded in your brain much to your chagrin. Try as ...

      • you may for the rest of the day, and the next and the next week, you find yourself humming this catchy little number throughout your day even though you try listening to everything from Zeppelin to Ludacris to get rid of it!

This ride was actually first created for the 1964 World’s fair. It was used as an exhibit and it’s purpose was to help the International organization, UNICEF. It was so well received at the World’s Fair that when Walt Disney World became a reality, it was added to the original plans for the park.

The line for this ride is not usually all that long. The good thing about it is that with each boat having four rows, it is able to hold 15-18 people in each one. This keeps the whole thing moving along fairly quickly and even if there is a small queue, it generally moves

pretty fast and the wait time is not long at all.

It’s a Small World has been open since Walt Disney World opened in 1971. I happened to be there on opening day! I was just 12 at the time. I went with my older brother. I remember loving this ride. It still is one of my favorites, although I guess it’s not considered “cool” to admit it! One thing you need to know when experiencing the “It’s a Small World” ride is that it’s not okay to use flash photography. If everybody was flashing their cameras, it would probably make the experience more annoying than enjoyable. I know it’s tempting because the ride is so vibrant and colorful and they recently refurbished it so it’s all bright and new again. But do try to bring a camera that you can set to get the picture without the flash.
