We had occasion to visit the Lowry Zoo in Tampa, FL this past Spring. I knew they had a zoo, but I had no idea that it was as large as it is or that it had as much to do there! I really want to go back again soon and take my little Granddaughter.

Lowry zoo is home to 2200 animals all exhibited in their natural habitats. They also have many shows going on while you visit the zoo that are worth catching if you can. I’ll try to see if I can remember all of the various sections of the zoo and give you a rough idea which animals live there and some of the shows that they offer as well.

Well, one of my absolute favorites is the Manatee Aquatic Center which allows you to see the Manatees underneath the water looking

through a glass to the tank of water and also on top in the upper part of the exhibit from above the water.

Then there is the Primate World which is home to Monkeys, Lemurs, Chimpanzees, Orangutans, Marmosets and Mandrills.

They have a section called the Birds of Prey exhibit. This is home to Owls, Hawks, Eagles, Vultures and Condors.

Safari Africa is as the name sounds, the home to what you might find on Safari in Africa! Elephants, Cheetah, Hippos, Zebras, Giraffes, Gazelles, Camels, Meerkats and African Penguins!

There is one area called the Florida Boardwalk which houses all the animals that are indigenous to Florida such as Alligators, Crocodiles, Cranes, Wild Turkeys, Key Deer, River Otter, Red Wolf, Skunk, Florida Panther, Stingrays, Snapping Turtles, and Black Bears.

The Asian Gardens is the home of Tapirs, Leopards, Sloth Bears, Komodo Dragon, Tufted Deer, and Rhinoceros to name a ...

      • few.

They have an Aviary that has over 50 species of birds. You can see Parrots, Macaws, Fruit Bats, Pigeons, Pheasant, Flamingos, Toucans, Herons, Peacocks, Hornbills and Doves and so many more that I can’t possibly remember!

And last but certainly not least, is the Wallaroo Station which is the home of the Kangaroos, Wallabies, Kookaburras, Pygmy Goats, Emu, Halflinger Horse (so pretty!) and New Guinea Dogs.

They offer varying shows at different times throughout the day and you get a copy of the schedule when you enter the zoo. The only show we did this visit was the Manatee Encounter which was a really good informative show about the endangered Manatee and how their Manatee Hospital is helping.

They have rides at the zoo too! You can take a ride atop a camel, Fly over the park on a sky ride, take a Safari ride on a guided tour, little

ones can ride ponies and there are also several cute kiddie rides for them to enjoy. They have a Flume Log ride that feels pretty awesome if it’s a hot day and they have a carousel.

You can buy a bracelet to ride the rides all day for like $16.

There is also a Guided boat tour but we didn’t go on that and it costs extra too. I think it was like $12-13. It was to go up the Hillsborough River and to see Turtles, Herons and Manatees.

It costs around $18 to get into the zoo for adults and $14 for kids 3-11. This is a pretty big zoo and there is quite a bit to see and do so it justifies the price. It’s not as pretty as some zoos I’ve seen, but it’s still pretty nice for the amount there is to see and do.

    Cayls says :

I went to the zoo with my parents during my winter vacation. Unfortunately, because it was so cold, some of the animals were hunkered down in their enclosures. This didn’t dampen our fun at all, though as the zoo was fully decorated with thousands of Christmas lights and the hours were extended to watch them sparkle.
