  • The climax, in which Teal'c rebels against Apophis, is definitely the exciting and dramatic highpoint to the episode

It’s been over a year since the events of the movie, titled “Stargate”. The stargate sits in Cheyenne Mountain, forgotten and disused. But suddenly, the stargate activates: an unknown alien and his minions come through, kidnap a couple Air Force soldiers, and leave.

A new military team, titled SG-1, is assembled. Their mission: to go thru the

stargate out into the galaxy and track down this mysterious alien. Along the way, the team picks up a warrior named Teal’c, who rebels against the alien, whose name we learn is Apophis. The team also learns that Ra, the alien from the movie, was not the only one of his kind. Apophis is one, and there are many others out there, still enslaving humans. And now Apophis has his sights set directly on Earth.

This two-hour pilot starts things off with a bang, with the new alien showing up right at the start to cause trouble. SG-1 team leader Jack O’Neill and doctor Daniel Jackson still have the same friendship and amusing interactions ...

that they did in the movie. Captain Samantha Carter is a welcome presence on the team, as she brings necessary scientific expertise to the team, and brings earnestness and occasional dry humor to the show.

The climax, in which Teal’c rebels against Apophis, is definitely the exciting and dramatic highpoint to the episode. The action is balanced with

some effective humor from the characters except Teal’c, who at this point in the show is still humorless. Carter makes an offhand remark about MacGyvering a stargate dialing system, and Jack and Daniel have a great bit about Daniel’s travel allergies.

All in all, this pilot is probably better than most. It’s a great start to a great show.

Lucas says :
