I visited Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona with my family in August 2005. It was an amazing experience that cannot be replaced by anything else. The Grand Canyon is one of a kind.

At Grand Canyon National Park you drive in on the south side of the Canyon and you can get a room about half a mile from the rim. The view from the rim is breathtaking, and there are plenty of good places to look.

At some places you can see down thousands of feet, and across the canyon for miles. The rim can be very crowded with other tourists but there is no shortage of view.

The Grand Canyon view is like nothing

else. We went hiking down into the canyon and immidiately the crowds disappeared.

One unique thing about hiking in the Grand Canyon is that unlike other hikes is that first you hike down into the canyon and then have to make your way back up. It is very easy to hike all the way down into the bottom of the canyon, but then you face a very steep and strenuous climb back out, often in over 100 degree heat.

Several people have died by making this mistake, and there are signs everywhere warning people not to attempt to go to the river (the bottom) and back in one day. We found that the hike to Indian Gardens, about ...

      • halfway down the canyon, is a good challenging hike but is not at all dangerous and it can be done in one afternoon if you bring enough water and snacks.

As soon as you hike down into the canyon you realize how big the canyon really is. Standing on top it looks big, but stand inside the canyon, along the gigantic rocks, and you will see what a truly amazing place this really is.

The thing that I hated about the Grand Canyon was the shuttle bus system. There are three bus lines: one that goes around to all of the different housing villages, to the rim, and to the cafeteria; one goes from the villages out to the

west side; one goes from the villages out to the east side.

The east and west shuttles are very useful because they just go out and back on one long road. The village shuttle, however, is usually not worth the effort.

It has to wind around so much that it is usually easier and faster just to walk than to wait for the shuttle and then wait as it winds its way around every single village and canyon vista location. Maybe its a good service for old people, but as a good walker I found the village shuttle quite useless.

The Grand Canyon is something that every person should see. The views and the hiking experience are unlike those at any other place.
