In the Philippines, there are very few schools that cater to children with special needs. Being an Occupational Therapist and a special education teacher, I have worked with a few of these schools and have seen the kinds of services they offer. Angeli Dei Schools, located in Mandaluyong City is one good school that provides education to children with pervasive development disorders (such as Autism and Asperger’s), Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), Down syndrome, Learning Disorder and those with Mental Retardation. Angeli Dei is a privately owned school.

The school provides assessment, one-on-one special classes, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy. It has an open enrolment policy that welcomes students anytime of the year. Students undergo intensive evaluation upon enrolment to make sure that Individualize Educational Plan is appropriate to their needs.

and school administrators then collaborate with the parents to set educational goals. Then the sessions begin and periodic reports are given so that parents can monitor the progress of their children. The school provides not only classroom intervention but also a lot of activities that will help the children’s social and practical skills.

There are a lot of educational field trips, talent presentations, arts and crafts, cooking activities and more. I can say that the teachers in there are competent, creative and care for their students so much. The physical school is small but has the therapy rooms, a playground, waiting area for caregivers, a reception area where the accounting/registrar is, the school administrator’s office, a kitchen and of course the well-lighted classrooms.

      • also have a Deaf Department both for preschool and grade school children. Great sign language interpreters teach the deaf students patiently. The school also offers Sign Language Interpreting classes for teachers, parents and other professionals to help them communicate better with their deaf love ones.

If I am not mistaken, the Deaf Department seeks sponsors so that they can offer scholarship for poor deaf students. After undergoing treatment and educational intervention, some students from Angeli Dei Schools become ready for mainstreaming or inclusion to a regular school setting. It can either be with a shadow teacher or without a shadow teacher.

From this need, the school board decided to put up a regular school just a few steps away from Angeli Dei Schools. They called it

Angels Institute of Learning. This school is open for preschool and grade school kids without any special needs.

They have a small student to teacher ration to ensure attention and needs are met. The children from Angeli Dei Schools who are ready for mainstreaming are moved to Angels Institute of Learning. In conclusion, I can say that Angeli Dei Schools is a good special school.

The tuition fee is a little bit on the expensive side. Some programs may need further improvement but with good teacher-parent collaboration, effective plan and implementation is possible thus improvements in the child’s behavior, academic and non-academic performance, practical and interpersonal skills can be expected. If you are interested in the service they provide, know more about the programs they offer and see for yourself.
