This is a review of the web based e-mail offered by Google Inc. and named GMail. Google has launched this service around three months back and successfully grabbed a part of the market with the innovative features it introduced in this service. Here I list down some of the facilities offered in GMail and which cannot be found in other services.

The first thing that comes to my mind is the storage space offered. GMail as of today offers a whopping 7GB storage space per account! This means that you will never ever have to delete a mail from your account. In fact, when you open, you can see the ‘current storage space’

      which keeps increasing everyday.

Next come the integration of messenger with the mail. The messenger is added as a gadget and can be located to the left of the window which will show all the contacts who are online. So, if you wanted to e-mail some one, you can first check this list and if that person is online, you can directly chat with the person live, instead mailing him. However this embedded messenger does not support file transfers, voice calls etc. which can be found in GTalk messenger.

Conversations! This is a pretty innovative and cool feature. If you mail some one and then receive a reply, Google automatically merges those two mails ...

      • and presents them as a conversation. So you exchange some 20 mails with your boss and all of them appear as a single conversation in the mail box, with a number showing the number of mails that conversation consists.

Five hundred mails at a time. Google will allow you to have 500 recipients in single mail. Compare this with 100 and 50 recipients of Yahoo and Hotmail respectively. Of course, GMail also has a limit of 500 per 24 hours. You can’t send more than this per day, but this is much more flexible than other services which do not allow more than 100 per day. You won’t need more than 500 a day,

unless you are planning to spam :)

GMail spam filter is as efficient as any other service and to be frank, probably not as efficient as Yahoo or Hotmail. Given that GMail is still in beta phase this can be excused.

A drawback is that, currently they do not support categorizing mails into folders. However they have a label system, which replaces the folder system. You can add a label for certain addresses and whenever you receive a mail form those addresses they will be labeled clearly. Labels come in many colors.

The interface is also not as attractive as the other e-mail services, but i don’t think, an attractive interface is rewuired for an e-mail service.
