When travelling to London I sometimes decide to get the train from Birmingham Snow hill down to London Marylebone station. This particular service is operated by Chilton Railways and is a rival for the Virgin Trains service from Birmingham New Street to London Euston.

The service takes around and hour and three quarters to get to London which is good. The service at rush hour normally has two trains joined together to give the train more carriages and capacity. The trains are normally three carriages long. Snow Hill isn’t a big station and has five platforms and is where I get the service from, however the service does start out from another station which is Worcester Forgate Street.

trains themselves are normally very clean and are reasonably new, there isn’t a buffet car on this trains but on some of the services they do have a cart that goes up and down the train a bit like on an airplane. The cart normally does hot and cold drinks and sometimes sandwiches crisps and chocolate if you’re lucky. There are toilets in each carriage normally and these are normally very clean. The seating arrangement is normally either doubles or in fours but there doesn’t appear to be two many carriages that have large tables in to do you’re work on, this is a shame as the train journey is the ideal time to get the laptop out ...

Chilton railways main station in London is Marylebone although there are a handful of services which run to London Paddington. They do also have a service that goes from Aylesbury through to Marylebone as well as the service that I use sometimes from Birmingham Snow Hill. The trains are the same on both lines and the operation is the same.

The staff on the trains are always very polite and helpful and there is an electronic display in each carriage displaying the destinations that the trains will call at. It also displays the next stop information which I find very helpful as if you fall asleep while on the train which I do,

do sometimes then at least you know where about your are.

The reliability of the service on offer is very good and I have not experienced many delays on this service. The trains have always been within ten minutes of there published arrival times. The only times they haven’t is when there have been engineering works on the line which is the fault of Chilton railways.

The trains to are always pretty full but I have never had to stand up on the train there have always been a spare seat somewhere on the train.

Overall I would recommend using this service as it is value for money and takes the hassle out of travelling to London on a regular basis.
