  • It cost £30 and with its little hand held device which emits ultra violet light, it looked like a more professional option to the various toothpastes, gels and rinses I've tried in the past
  • So I paid the £30 and went home with hope in my heart
  • However I decided to carry on with the system for the full 14 days recommended
  • After just over a week using the rapid white I noticed that when I switched on the ultra violet light box, the time between me switching it on and it automatically turning off, beeping, was getting shorter and shorter, until, on day 9, almost a soon as I turned it on it beeped and went back off

I had high hopes for the Rapid White tooth whitener. It cost £30 and with its little hand held device which emits ultra violet light, it looked like a more professional option to the various toothpastes, gels and rinses I’ve tried in the past. So I paid the £30 and went home with hope in my heart. On first inspection everything seemed fine with this kit. You get the hand held ultra violet light thing, an accelerator, which is a little stick of liquid, a paste to be painted onto the teeth and a mouth rinse. The step by step instructions inside the kit tell you to begin with the accelerator and then paint the paste onto each tooth which you want to be whitened. Then you should hold the ultra violet light box up to your teeth and

switch it on. After two minutes the device will beep and automatically switch itself off. You then need to repeat step three, so just switch the thing back on and it will beep again when the time is up. Finish off by brushing off the excess paste, then use the rinse.

It all sounded fairly straightforward. My first attempt didn’t end too well though. I’d read the scary warning which tells you not to look into the ultra violet light as you could go blind, and to minimise contact with the lips and gums, and if irritation occurs stop using. But it is a little hard to minimise contact with lips and gums when the instructions tell you to ‘hold’ the device ‘up to you teeth’ so on my first attempt I ended up with a nasty little burn and ...

      • blister at each corner of my mouth. Realising this was probably my fault for not using it properly, I went to the website given on the box for more information. And this is where I really started to loose heart with this system. There is far more information on the website than there is in the instructions that come with the box. As I read through I began to hear alarm bells ringing in my head at the mention of this system being a ’stain removal’ system that will not whiten teeth beyond their natural colour. Ah. Not exactly a whitener then, but more of a stain remover. My teeth are not stained, I would just like them to be whiter than they are. If I had known this little nugget of information when I picked up the box
in the shop I would never have spent £30 on it.

However I decided to carry on with the system for the full 14 days recommended. You never know, it might miraculously work. After just over a week using the rapid white I noticed that when I switched on the ultra violet light box, the time between me switching it on and it automatically turning off, beeping, was getting shorter and shorter, until, on day 9, almost a soon as I turned it on it beeped and went back off. I can only assume that the battery had gone. Not very impressive then. It’s hard to say whether this system actually worked as the battery in the light box was dead before the recommended two weeks of use were up. But are my teeth any whiter at all for using this system? No.
