  • The decor outside of the theaters is very interesting, with a focus on elephants I don't quite understand
  • The problem with this larger theater (Dreamland) is that the unusual shape of the room can make the acoustics ineffective
  • It has a classical, romantic feeling and makes the movie experience that much more special
  • The prices charged by the Colonial Theater are reasonable, and being that this is the only theater for a good driving distance it is definitely better than spending extra on gas

Vintage theaters can be fascinating places, and the Colonial Theater in Belfast Maine is absolutely spell binding. Featuring 3 surprisingly large theaters with enchanting names like “Dreamland”, this family-owned business shows blockbuster Hollywood movies the week they are released as well as local films and plays.

The decor outside of the theaters is very interesting, with a focus on elephants I don’t quite understand.

Old fashioned movie posters line the walls and even the bathrooms are creative: Inside each stall

is a small chalkboard with chalk to apply your most shareable thoughts (and perhaps to distract those that would otherwise carve messages into the doors).

The two upstairs theaters are fairly plain, rectangle-shaped affairs, with decent sound and visuals.

The downstairs theater is definitely the most interesting, and can be reached only by a long and dizzying diagonal up-and-down hall way.

It has balconies above with normal padded theater seats and folding chairs if those are full; below there is ...

      • ample seating in the center.

The problem with this larger theater (Dreamland) is that the unusual shape of the room can make the acoustics ineffective.

From certain seats it is hard to see the screen, and it can have a stifling atmosphere with poor circulation.

Besides that, we still prefer that theater the most, and will often check to see if the movie we’re viewing is showing there (viewable online at the Colonial Theater website).

        It has a classical, romantic

feeling and makes the movie experience that much more special.

The prices charged by the Colonial Theater are reasonable, and being that this is the only theater for a good driving distance it is definitely better than spending extra on gas.

Food and drink are available (canned soda, popcorn, candy) and not too outrageously priced.

In summary, if you’re in the mind to see a movie with a friend or group of friends, make it a special occasion and give the Colonial Theater a try.
