  • Basically, the food, price, and service are all quite average-- the only thing that the Roadhouse does do differently is the atmosphere

One of the great things about chain restaurants is that no matter where in the states you travel, you’ll be able to find a familiar restaurant to eat at. The Texas Roadhouse in Bangor, ME, is an unusual find among the more typical steak houses in the area, bringing southern attitude along with its meaty dishes.

When the restaurant first came to town a few years ago, the rumor mill was buzzing with the notion that you could throw the shells from your complementary

      peanuts on the floor (!).

While not an uncommon notion in the south, here in Maine where people tend to be more reserved and generally polite when eating out, it was a new phenomenon.

Aside from littering your peanut shells willy nilly, the Roadhouse has a few major differences as well.

As soon as you enter, you’ll be welcomed with very loud honky tonk country music announcing various rebellious notions about new trucks, proud love, and cowboy hats.

In my case being hungry and ...

      • then subjected to such music as we waited for a table was not a joyous occasion.

Once we sat down and started eating, the music was a bit more tolerable.

I suspect once alcohol enters the picture it becomes enjoyable, but in our case our travel plans didn’t allow for such pleasures either time we went.

The menu is not astounding in any regard, and you’ll find plates of steaks, potatoes, fish, and seafood, just as you would expect at any other steak house

        (Applebee’s, Outback, Smokey Bones).

The food is decent and the service is friendly.

True to the region it hails from, the Roadhouse does make an excellent margarita, and many of my friends in the area enjoy going there after work just for that reason.

Basically, the food, price, and service are all quite average– the only thing that the Roadhouse does do differently is the atmosphere.

Don’t bring your kids, don’t bring your parents; come with friends and put on your party hats.

        Otherwise, go to Bugaboo Creek.
