If you are an art lover or just a gawker, this little museum in Amsterdam is a must see. The admission price is dirt cheap for a tourist attraction. It is literally, the best value you can get for your euro in Amsterdam and touring can easily occupy an entire morning or afternoon. There is also a restaurant and gift shop on site and are also reasonably priced.

Come early because the lines will get long and then you’ll find yourself stuck in a cattle drive style procession. Meaning, you’ll be herded through the building. On my initial visit, I arrived in the early afternoon only to find one long line

stretching throughout the entire length of the museum.

It left little opportunity to sit and marvel or enjoy the artwork. I got disgusted and left with the intent of coming back early the next morning. I was gambling that if I arrived just after opening, I wouldn’t have to stand in a long shuffling line trying to get a glimpse of the pictures hanging on the wall.

A friend recommended visiting on Friday night since they are open late this one evening and the crowds are manageable. My gamble paid off in the morning. I recommend others consider this approach unless you have no options due to time constraints.

      The museum ...

      • itself is nice, well kept, air conditioned, and modern. It’s a big attraction and you’ll find yourself rubbing elbows with people from literally all over. Having the time and space to actually converse with them is a nice bonus to coming early.

On entering the building make sure you check all bags into the coat desk. Museum staff is very security conscious so be aware of the rules like no touching of the artwork and no picture taking. No touching is common sense, but I saw one person expelled for taking snapshots.

The fact they claimed ignorance to the rule didn’t help their case. If you come to a piece that

you particularly admire, it is courteous to be aware of how much time you spend standing directly in front of it. Be aware that there might be others trying to take a gander and yield if you notice you are blocking access or obstructing the view for too many others.

Art lovers can find themselves enthralled here. But, children will likely be very bored as there is little for them to do or appreciate. Only a very small number of paintings will be at eye level for many of them.

So it may be wise to consider an alternative activity for those family members. The Van Gogh Museum is a great value and worth your a visit.
