Interstate 68 runs along the Mason Dixon line. It runs along the border between Western Maryland and Western Pennsylvania. It it a new road that runs parallel with the old route Interstate 40/48. I 68 begins near the Maryland, Pennyslvania border just north of the town of Hancock.

I 68 is also an alternative to route 70. A major East West roadway. 68 runs to Morgantown West Virginia and I 79.

I find 68 to be a very pleasant alternative to route 70 and also the Pennslvania

Turnpike. It has some interesting stops along the way. The first is Sideling Hill about ten miles after you have gotten on the roadway.

A mountain with several exposed layers of rock is visible. There is a small tourist stop there that provides information about the Civil War and the Cumberland valley. In the building there are examples of the wildlife from the area, there are also restrooms on both sides of 68.

There are vending machines on the Westbound side. There is also a beautiful view from the parking lot nto the valley ...

      • below. Continuing on you pass through the old Industrial town of Cumberland Md.

There are many opportunities for gas, food and lodging should you need it. Further on there is Frostburg Md. where Frostburg State is located.

It is a smaller town. You can also if you have the time visit the historic town of Grantsville, Md. It is home to the historic Casselman bridge over the Casselman River.

It is an example of stone bridge construction that was used in the 1800’s

but not for the past 100 years or so. There are also interesting mennonite places to eat in Grantsville. Continuing westward you will pass beautiful Cheat Lake outside the University town of Morgantown West Virginia.

It is a a very bucolic scene in West Virginia with the beautiful mountains and grassy hillsides. WVU is your exit for I 79. It is a great town with lots of things to do.

I would definitely recommend I 68 for anyone looking for an alternative to I 70 and the Pa. turnpike.
