This movie is based on a horror / ghost story by Henry James. A young governess is hired to take care of two children, a boy and a girl. The number 1 condition their uncle has hired her on is to never contact him about the children - never. As soon as the governess arrives to the estate, they will be in her charge, and

the uncle does not want to be bothered.

The young lady agrees. She learns that her predecessor, the previous governess, is dead, but no one seems to be willing to tell her how it happened. Soon, she discovers that the mansion is haunted by the ghost of the dead governess, as well as the ghost of her lover, the master’s valet.

They had an affair, and she had gotten pregnant; that’s why she had killed herself. In all honesty, I did not really understand this story. The ghosts, it appears, are after the children.

They want to somehow corrupt their souls. The governess tries to protect them, but she does not know how. It seems that the children can see the ghosts as well, and they are hiding this fact.

The governess wants to make them admit it, seeing it as the first step on the way to saving them from the ghosts’ influence. The housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, cannot see the ghosts but senses that something is wrong.

She believes the governess, but sometimes doubts her. The movie is filled with tension. You know that the ghosts can show up any moment, and you don’t

      understand what they want.

You also suspect that the children are not so nice as they are trying to appear. I hoped all the mysteries would be resolved in the end, but the ending surprised me and left most of the questions unanswered. I enjoyed Pam Ferris as Mrs.

Grose, even though she was only a secondary character. Except for that, I am rather disappointed with the movie.
