Nightwatch was produced by Timur Bekmambetov. It is a science fiction action movie with a very interesting main plot and a few different subplots, that interlink in the end of the movie, but still leave the ending to be somewhat mysterious.

The film begins with a prologue, a picture which is set in the pre-Christian times.

From it we find out that there was always a constant battle between the good “others” and the bad “others”, but neither the light nor the darkness could win because their powers were equal.

      Then

straight away the time and place of the events are changed as we are brought into the modern Moscow as it is now, only to find out that it is not as normal as we think.

It is filled with demons and vampires as well as white and pure magic figures of light, who live in compromise according to the agreement between the light and the darkness.

The events unfold quickly and at times unexpectedly as a new figure appears, a boy who is neither with the good magicians nor with ...

      • the evil ones, whose fate is undefined, and who is going to end the constant battle of the dark and light.

A series of close up shots and low angle shots are used to enhance the storyline and to emphasize the importance of some scenes.

The lighting is used very effectively as in some scenes blue and dark colours predominate setting a sad and depressed mood.

The special effects are at their best and, in my opinion, if compared to the special effects of the popular trilogy “Matrix”, they are better,

as the computer-generated metamorphosis of wharewolves is performed gradually and conforms with reality.

The picture is also set in a completely normal and usual background of modern Moscow, which brings more reality to the movie and makes us feel involved in the scene.

Overall the movie is brilliant, and I felt, it even went higher in terms of quality than Matrix, plus it is also a trilogy, can’t wait untill the next part of it is released.

It is from Russia with love and a lot of obvious skill of film-making!
