The Mardasson memorial lies hidden away in the countryside near the city of Bastogne, in Belgium. It is one of many tributes and reminders of the Second World War dedicated to the Americans who fought and died here. The Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes campaign, the REAL soldiers of Easy Company (made known by HBO’s “Band of Brothers”), General McAuliffe’s rebuttal: “Nuts!” - all happened in this place.

Was it worth seeing? To this old soldier - Absolutely. The memorial structure is

impressive, but could definitely use a little TLC.

It needs to be cleaned and could benefit from a number of minor repairs. A large split in one of the columns had caused damage to some of the inscriptions and displays of military unit insignias.

It was disheartening to see the symbol for my old unit. the screaming eagle of the 101st Airborne Division, cracked in half and left hanging there for all to see.

Around the grounds are a couple of battle tanks ...

      • and other types of military vehicles. They are in great shape and worth standing next to for a snapshot.

Inside the historical center are a small museum and gift shop. Neither offers much to see.

They are expensive and absolutely not worth the price. There is no charge for the memorial itself and that’s where a visitor should spend their time.

Make sure you bring some pocket change so you can pay to use the rest rooms. The 30 cent charge doesn’t seem

to be enough to have a janitor keep the place clean, though, someone is obviously paid to take 30 cents from you.

Despite a lack of upkeep, the people who work here, and those visiting seem to have their hearts in the right places. There is an air of respect that permeates the grounds.

I would recommend people make a special trip out from Bastogne just to see this memorial. Overlook the lack of upkeeping and the museum and gift shop tourist traps and the experience is worthwhile.
