Before I reached Israel, I never heard of the word “Kibbutz”. I had the good fortune of staying in Kibbutz Mizra and observing first hand the actual working of a Kibbutz. Kibbutzs are collective settlements owned by the members where there is no concept of individual ownership.

Kibbutz Mizra was founded in the year 1923. These were formed by the ancient Jewish settlers in a part of the ancient Palestine, now known as Israel.

      In a way it

can be stated that Kibbutz is a combination of Communism and Zionism where the residents work according to their capacity and are paid as per their needs. When the Jews migrated to Palestine from different countries, they brought with them their own cultures.

Those from Russia and other East European countries were instrumental in forming these Kibbutzs which not only served their tradition but also provided them security and livelihood. Initially the kibbutzs lived on agriculture farming, but ...

      • slowly entered into manufacturing and other industries.

What I found was that the original concept of Kibbutz is slightly out of tune with the modern day world, with the younger generation trying to move out and live in an independent world of their own. We saw a dairy farm owned by the Kibbutz which has all the modern machinery for milking.

The yield per cow was one of the highest in the world. This Kibbutz is also known for

its pork products and is one of the best known port suppliers in Israel.

The kibbutz is also running guest house accommodation. It also runs a full fledged canteen for the international students studying at Galillee College where we used to feast on a variety of tasty food items during our stay.

The people staying at Kibbutz are not only hard working but also fun loving and we used to see them engaged in dance and music during the week ends.
