“Viva Las Vegas” is one of my favorite Elvis Presley films. I’ve wanted it on DVD for a long time, so last week was able to acquire the Deluxe Edition.

The DVD container comes with a slide on jacket of Elvis and Ann-Margret. The back of the jacket actually has the same information printed on it as the normal DVD back cover has. Inside is a 24-page photo book with lots of photos of Elvis and Ann. The photos are nice

and unique. It really was nice to thumb through it and remember these two vivacious performers. It made long for those days when Elvis was so beautiful and alive.

Along with the theatrical trailer, the DVD includes a featurette called “Kingdom: Elvis in Las Vegas”. It really is an interesting account of Elvis’s career and how this movie and Las Vegas itself played a pivotal role in his post-Hollywood movie success. Steve Pond, who wrote a book on Elvis, is a ...

      • big part of the featurette, which also includes the memories of some TCB bandmembers.

Steve Pond also provides the commentary for the movie, and he had a lot to say. He was clearly knowledgeable about Elvis, his career, and the making of the movie, but sometimes it felt like overkill. He repeated some things so that by the end, I was rolling my eyes. It wasn’t bad; it just could have been organized better. I did learn a lot about the

film’s production, as well Colonel Parker’s ridiculous managing of Elvis’ career and his sad control over the films and the man America has loved for decades.

My only complaint about the commentary is that I really do wish Steve Pond had just taken a few more breaths and not dwelled so much on a couple of points that were brought up over and over again, sometimes with one additional morsel of information to make it new.

Overall, watching this deluxe edition on DVD will make for a pleasurable evening.
