  • Low light photography is not a problem anymore with this lens
  • I have not had a chance to test the autofocus, but then again if it will autofocus with your camera, it isn't a lens issue anymore as the autofocus drive motor would be in your camera body

I’ve recently accquired this lens for use with my Nikon D40. The Nikon 50mm f1.8 is the cheapest lens in the Nikon lineup, but it is also one of the sharpest.

The lens is able to shoot at apertures ranging from f1.8 to f22, and with a minimum focusing distance of 0.5m.

At f1.8 the depth of field gets extremely shallow, especially when shooting about 1.5 to 0.5 meters from your subject, so you have to

be very precise with your focusing, if your camera is like mine, and will not autofocus with it. I don’t find this to be a hassle, however, as the focusing ring does not have a great range of movement, so I can focus fast and get the shots I need with it all the time.

The lens is at its sharpest at about f4. When shooting at 1.8 I didn’t think too much of the sharpness,

      • but after reading an article that said a lens is at its sharpest 2 stops down from its maximum aperture, I tried it out and honestly it is true. The lens is extremely sharp at this aperture.

Holding the lens while attached to a camera, it feels kind of cheap and plasticky. But the images I take with it erase that impression completely.

Low light photography is not a problem anymore with this lens.I have not had

a chance to test the autofocus, but then again if it will autofocus with your camera, it isn’t a lens issue anymore as the autofocus drive motor would be in your camera body.

If you’re looking to improve your photography, take photos in low light or just want a good cheap prime lens, this is the one you’re looking for. Going for USD$100 (as of July 2008), you can’t beat the bang for buck that this lens gives.
