  • If they do not (because seats were not available - this does not stop the system from taking your money first) you will have to rebook your ticket at a much higher cost (the cost goes up closer to the travel date and as demand goes up), pay again, and wait for a refund of the original amount paid which could take upto 8 weeks or more

If you are thinking of travelling to or within India, choose Sahara or Jet Airways over Indian Airlines. Indian Airlines airplanes seem to date from the immediate post-war period, the service is very shoddy, curt and abrupt and one often feels one is on a bus on a bad road, not a plane in the skies because of the constant bumps and jolts!

The staff let you know they, and not you, the customer, occupy a special position in the airlines.

The staff on Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines on the other hand, are very professional, polite and courteous.

I have travelled many times to India and within India, mostly on Indian Airlines because of its lower fares compared

to other airlines lke Singapore Airlines, which of course, offers excellent service but is very pricey.

Recently, Sahara started flying from to India from some countries overseas and travelling to Delhi on Sahara, I was very pleasantly surprised by their courteous, friendly service, and attempts to go out of their way to make the traveller comfortable.

Their fares are very compettive too.

For the lowest fares for travel within India, you could try Deccan Airways, but beware of booking online.

You might end up paying and not get a ticket or ticket number.

They have a very unpleasant system on the internet of collecting your money first (via credit card) and then checking for seat availability and ticket number ...

      • which may or may not appear before your screen mysteriously goes blank! Make sure you write down the order number which appears before quickly disappearing while the screen tells you to wait for the ticket number! There is no way you can on your ticket without the ticket number.

The system does not allow you to check on your ticket with the order number.

You cannot do anything with the order number except make overseas calls to an Air Deccan representative whom you try to convince of your order.

Or you can wait till you get to India and make your way to an Air Deccan office if the city you visit has one (or make more long distance

calls to the city where the office is located - they do not provide 800 numbers) and give them the order number.

They may or may not give you a ticket number.

If they do not (because seats were not available - this does not stop the system from taking your money first) you will have to rebook your ticket at a much higher cost (the cost goes up closer to the travel date and as demand goes up), pay again, and wait for a refund of the original amount paid which could take upto 8 weeks or more! So, best to go to India and make the booking in an Air Deccan office and get a ticket (printout of the purchase) on the spot!
