Agra, INDIA
  • These will be shops with which they have a prior arrangement to get 40 per cent of a sale made to the clients, not necessarily the best shops with the best quality goods
  • For overseas Indians, you can avoid paying the foreigner entry fee to the Taj Mahal of Rs 750 (about US$1 to Rs 43) and pay the local fee of Rs 20 if you dress very locally and avoid letting your accent be heard until you are well inside the Taj Mahal
  • While it might seem convenient to drive to Agra by Delhi (which is what I did not knowing any better), I would revceomment staying one night in DElhi, and then taking the early morning chair car air conditioned train to Agra
  • From there get a taxi or auto (3-wheeler only found in India, I believe) to the Deedar-e-Taj

The Deedar-e-Taj hotel, about 2-3km from the famed Taj Mahal, one of the ancient wonders of the world is a 3-star hotel offers very reasonable, almost 2-star rates and is suitable for the budget traveller who wants comfort and might be travelling with a family. Clean, pleasant, medium-sized fully carpeted rooms (carpeting cannot always be expected in budget hotels in India) with pleasant, efficient staff and service made my stay there last year very pleasant. A revolving rooftop restaurantoffers distant views of the Taj Mahal.

The cuisine was above average. I only tried the breakfast and Indian dinner.

The buffet breakfast had both Western and eastern dishes. The Taj Mahal was a sight to behold.

An important point to remember is that it is closed on Fridays so work your holiday schedule around this.

My agent (from India) whom I liaised with over the Internet was not even aware that it was closed on Friday, so we arrived on a Thursday night, spent the next day looking at shops in Agra and visited the Fathepur Sikhiri Fort (ancient monument, and the next day, when we had to leave for Delhi, we rushed to the Taj Mahal in the morning! So make sure you make your booking so that you have a lot of time for the Taj Mahal, not a rushed couple of hours like I had! It is a place one can spend hours in, sitting in the graden surrounding the Taj, or just in the monument itself, admiring the splendour of the Taj.

Beware of taxi drivers who offer to drive you from Delhi to Agra ...

      • where the Taj Mahal is located. They will offer to take you to shops in Agra.

These will be shops with which they have a prior arrangement to get 40 per cent of a sale made to the clients, not necessarily the best shops with the best quality goods. Be especially wary of shops selling “authentic” silk and Persian carpets that your driver takes you to.

If you want to buy carpets in Agra, go the factories. Your guide in the Taj Mahal could probably guide you to a good factory.

For overseas Indians, you can avoid paying the foreigner entry fee to the Taj Mahal of Rs 750 (about US$1 to Rs 43) and pay the local fee of Rs 20 if you dress very locally and avoid letting your accent be heard

until you are well inside the Taj Mahal. The ticket guards have very well trained eyes, and see hordes of Indians and foreigners daily and are able to spot immediatley even from a person’s stance whether one is an Indian from India or an Indian from abroad.

Of course, non-Indian foreigners have no choice but to pay the foreigner entry fee. While it might seem convenient to drive to Agra by Delhi (which is what I did not knowing any better), I would revceomment staying one night in DElhi, and then taking the early morning chair car air conditioned train to Agra.

From there get a taxi or auto (3-wheeler only found in India, I believe) to the Deedar-e-Taj. From there, the hotel, it is easy to get a taxi or auto to the Taj Mahal and other attractions.
