On our trip with our travel trailer we ended up in a small mining town called Ouray, CO. Located on Hwy 550 about 70 miles north of Durango, CO. This small quaint town is nestled in the most rugged and towering mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountain’s. Ouray has been named as the “Switzerland of America”. The views of the mountains tower as high as 13,000 feet high, and there you will see several water falls coming out the side of the mountains. Most of the year the higher peakes are covered with snow. This location is getting more popular as there are more visitors’s going there year after year. In town is the Ouray County Museum, there is much history in the Museum to see. There, you will see artifacts from the Ute Indians, mining exhibit, photographs, and books. This museum is child friendly with activity finder books. The children will enjoy

the hands on items in the museum. We spend a lot of time viewing all the museum had to offer.

There is a great variety of dinning restaurants in town and they aim to please their visitor’s. You can dine at the most elegant restaurant serving beef Wellington to a small Mexican restaurant serving tacos. You have your choice of the type of restaurant you want to eat at. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is quiet picturesque. We like the casual atmosphere for relaxing in. The food was great and the service was great also.

There are a number of shops for all to visit. This town has become a center of creativity where locals displays their talents from hand made gifts to artistic paintings. The locals are friendly people and welcome you with open arms. We enjoyed strolling down the street “both sides” and observing all lovely gifts and paintings.

      • I especially like the hand made Indian gifts that are sold in the store. Their original hand made Indian jewelry is exquisite. Hand made blankets, Indian dolls and so much more to mention.

Oh yes, don’t miss the natural hot springs. It is right on Highway 550 as you enter the town. There is a hotel right at entrance of the town and you will see the hot springs from the road. It’s fairly large for the location it’s in. It was mid afternoon as we drove into town and there were several people in it already. We did not get a chance to in it, but was told it was relaxing and healthy.

After enjoying our day in Ouray we traveled on Hwy 550, this takes to into Silverton, CO. approximately 22 miles south of Ouray. You will be driving on what the locals call the “Million Dollar Highway”. If you are not afraid of heights

this won’t be a problem for anyone. As you drive on this highway it is a two lane road with the mountain on one side and major drop off on the other side. There is no room for errors when driving. The side of the highway drops down to a 3000 foot cliff. Where you see the white line on the side of the road it drops off. So when traveling on the highway keep alert and drive slowly. There is much to see on the road but pay attention to the road. You will see a water fall flowing out from under the highway, it is really amazing to see. The Highway is winding in some spots but all in all it was a beautiful drive into Silverton. We would definitely come back here and visit again. The town expresses such warmth and peace. You will enjoy seeing so much on this trip.
