1984 is a book nobody should miss. It is so captivating, so well written, a novel one will never forget. The skill of the author in creating the dark and gloomy atmosphere of a dictatorial society is amazing. You identify with the main character in his strive to retain his freedom and his dignity as a human being. As long

as there is one fighting against the oppressive system and the seemingly unlimited power of Big Brother, there is still hope. But hope is not part of the picture, it has to be crushed like all the other human rights in a despotic mind-controlling society.

The end of the novel leaves no room for hope. The last fighter for justice ...

      • is brainwashed, which proves the futility of any attempt to escape the system. His fate is worst than death because he is deprived of his very essence, of the things he believes in and turned into a dummy. The iron wall of the system cannot be broken, nor even cracked, the situation turns against the intellectual or anyone who has
        a difference of opinion.

As the citizen of an ex-communist country, I can relate to many things in this book and I think it’s a perfect allegory of the communist era: the brainwashing, the persecution of the intellectuals, the new language, the barbaric methods of ‘taming’ people. It is one of those visionary books comprising a whole era and a whole mentality.
