Boulogne France
  • To be fair this is the only bad experience we have encountered at Boulogne
  • All the services at the port are run by Speedy Ferries rather than the port themselves which does go some way to explaining why the facilities on offer aren't the best
  • Overall I would recommend using this port as the crossing is quick and the whole process of sailing from there I very quick and painless

Boulogne Port, is the port that we always use on our way back in to the UK from France. The port itself is very small and the only company that currently operates out of there is Speedy Ferries.

We have had a couple of mixed experiences of the check in process at the port, the first time we went there the French lady at the check in point wouldn’t check us in as she said we were to early. Then we had to drive around Boulogne for an hour then when we returned to the docks it was an English lady and she said we could

have checked in earlier if we had wanted to. To be fair this is the only bad experience we have encountered at Boulogne.

Once we have checked in we go through the British passport control which has been very lack both times we have gone through. There is no customs on this side of the crossing and it seemed to us that you could take anything on board and no one would be any the wiser.

Once in the port there is not much to do, other than stop in the car or visit the small bar / shop area. The choice in the shop is ...

      • very limited as it is in the duty free shop. All the services at the port are run by Speedy Ferries rather than the port themselves which does go some way to explaining why the facilities on offer aren’t the best. At the bar there is a small choice of food on offer but like on board the boat if you are not on one of the first couple of crossing of the day then you won’t get anything other than crisps.

The toilets at the dock are surprisingly clean and tidy as is the port its self. The staff are a mix of English and French

and are on the whole polite and friendly. Outside there are plenty of bins dotted around which is great for us as we use the waiting time to give the car a good clean out following the two days of driving that we had just undertaken. There is nowhere for the kids to stretch their legs which is a shame so we have to take the eldest of for a walk to see the other small boats in the local marina which is adjoining the port.

Overall I would recommend using this port as the crossing is quick and the whole process of sailing from there I very quick and painless.
