On the central coast only 10 minutes from Vandenberg Air Force Base set’s the small town of Lompoc, California. With the location perfect for those employed at the base and those who love the ocean, but don’t want to live right on the water. Lompoc is kind of a hidden town you have to look for.

As you drive along highway 101 you take the Vandenberg Exit and just follow the signs. It’s in a valley surrounded by coastal mountains. There are several large hotels and motels to choose from for your vacation stay and you are within driving distance of Santa

Maria, Guadalupe and Santa Barbara. You can drive to the beaches of Avila and Pismo within 30 minutes. Lompoc has great eating places and you don’t want to miss Alfie’s Fish and Chips. They serve the best on the coast. They are only a small place, but have great food.

But Lompoc is best known for their near perfect year round weather in which they grow field after field of beautiful flowers. They are a huge suppliers of seeds to companies from all over the world. In the spring you can drive through the field and see every kind of flower ...

      • and endless colors. With good sunlight and soft ocean breezes they thrive in the ground season after season.

During the summer Lompoc present the Flower Festival at the local park in the center of town. I love the festival and have been a part of it in years past as well as many family members and friends. They have a carnival set up in one section and booth of all kinds serving foods, crafts and even flower seeds for your own garden.

But this year 2008 Lompoc presents the Flag That Never Flies. It is flowers in the colors of red, white

and blue. Covering several acre’s of ground is the American Flag all grown in flowers. The main flower used is the Larkspur. The flag is planted in stars, strips and colors according to the American specs of style, size and shape to present as an American flag in the true sense of the word.

I have searched the internet and haven’t found anywhere else presenting the colors and representing their country like Lompoc, California has. It is a tribute to our hero’s everywhere that work for a right of freedom and keeping our own shores safe. So to Lompoc, California we thank you.
