Take highway 90 out of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and head east to the great town of Wallace! This is a fun little town. It is an old town with a great history in silver mining and the main income of the town is still mining. But it is a tourist town also. There are museums of all kinds on the mining industry, antiques and the living conditions at the height of the mining boom when long skirts and live stage shows of the old west were wild.

      Wallace offers attractions like

the Sierra Silver Mine Tour. You’ll go by old time trolly to the mine where you enter deep underground for a guided tour. You’ll learn a lot about how silver is brought out of the ground, processed and sold.

You’ll also experience how truely dark a mine can be when the candles or power goes off. You can look around on your own with a self guided walking tour through the town. You’ll find a lot of great places like my favorite.

      E. J. ’s Pizza and ice cream.

      They serve the best ...

      • Huckleberry ice cream in the north. Huckleberries are a classic to this section of the state and now a favorite of mine. Watch the antique stores.

They are great fun to go through, but their prices are high. Don’t buy something you aren’t sure about it’s worth. One of the stores has a sign in the window saying “This is not a museum, this junk is for sale!” I thought it was funny enough to make me enter the store and look around.

They have a great collection of dolls, hats,

sewing antiques and lots of other great things from an earlier era. They are also one of the cheapest stores in town and the cleanest. You can find great ice cream, great beer and even great antlers for sale in this little community.

It was the bases for the movie Dante’s Peak and it’s realty sales are lower than you can imagine. But your earning capabilities in the winter time are very low so be sure to checkt he area carefully if you feel you want to live there. Good luck and have fun with this one.
