      In the era of “Bleeding Kansas”, the time when Kansas was being fought over because of the argument of whether or not it would be a free state Lidie Newton was a tomboy, and she once she had met Thomas Newton, she knew that he would be someone who would serve

      as a good spouse. At least, that is what her original presumptions were. Shortly after meeting Thomas, they decide to get married. Lidie probably did not guess that her life would completely change because of this permanent bond that was just made.

      Lidie Newton’s story only truly begins once she gets married to Thomas Newton, who is an abolitionist.

      Not too long after, and to Lidie’s horror, Thomas is murdered by an African American. After this tragic event, Lidie decides to become a young male boy reporter in Missouri, as a cover for her true identity. Her real motives are to find the killers of ...

      in. Lidie tries to make the slave of the place become free, but this does not work either. By the end of the book though, it’s still quite unclear what Lidie wants to do or what will become of her, but her mental journey was probably more successful than the failing physical one.
