The ever happy Guido Orefice(Roberto Benigni) moves into Tuscan from a neighboring town and falls in love with Dora(Nicoletta Braschi). He wins her approval by surprising her with unexpected visits. They get married and soon have a son whom they name Giosué(Giorgio Cantarini). They lead a smooth life until the German invasion of Italy where the family is taken to a concentration camp. Dora is separated from her family and

put in a different part of the camp along with the other women. Guido tries to establish contact with his wife and in the meanwhile, tries to shield his son from the cruelties of the camp. Guido convinces his son that a game is taking place and the winner of the game gets a military tank as a prize. The climax tells us if the family escapes ...

      • from the concentration camp or not.

Roberto Benigni’s excels in portraying the character of a very happy man in his prime who always looks at the brighter side of life. His antics to try and win over Dora in his bachelor days are hilarious and the character of Giosué has been performed to perfection by young Giorgio Cantarini. Guido’s translation of the German officer’s orders would bring a smile

to anyone’s face and helps ease the tension in an otherwise crucial part of the movie.

Set it the late 1930’s against the back drop of a lazy Italian village, this heart warming tale about the unity of a family goes right into the top drawer.

I d give it a 9 on 10 only in the hope that Roberto Benigni will out do himself in his next project.
