I rented this movie because of Michael Caine, and, as usual, he does a good job as Dr. Larch who runs a children’s home/hospital in Maine. One of the boys, Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) grows up in the orphanage to be a young man and is has been trained by Dr.

Larch as his assistant. Homer does his work,

but, although he loves the children, he appears to be reluctant to become the doctor’s replacement, which Dr.

Larch would like to see, in its time. When a young couple comes in to have an abortion done, Homer decides to leave with them as the lady recovers and they go back.

      apple pickers. Dr.

Larch is, of course, disappointed to hear this, he thinks Homer is wasting his talent of a doctor. Homer, however, writes back that he is perfectly happy and has no intention to return.

“We’ve lost him,” Dr. Larch says to one of his nurses.

Unfortunately, he dies still believing this. But Homer does return in the

      end.

After having an affair with Candy, Wally’s girlfriend who “cannot stay alone,” and performing an abortion on Rose, an apple picker impregnated by her own father, Homer decides that he’s had enough of “the world. ” When he receives the letter informing him of Dr.

Larch’s death, he goes back, to be what Dr. Larch always wanted him to be.
