After the ring came out in 2002, quite a few movie producers have tried to copy its success by tweaking the plot a bit. One Missed Call does this as well. Too bad they don’t do a good enough job at it.

In theory, this should be a scary film. Whenever someone dies in it, their cell phone calls someone on their friend’s list and that person receives a message from themselves dated a couple days later.

That date always turns out to be the exact time of their death. The problem is the execution is a bit weak.

The movie goes to the same tired format many other movies use. The police don’t believe the heroes, the deaths always have some sort of shock factor that ends up losing the shock value because you already know they are going to die.

And, the movie just has to find a way to put some ...

      • sort of creepy kid in it. I’m very confused by the ending of this film too.

At first, we think it’s an abusive mother. Then they indicate it’s actually an abusive older sister who died of an asthma attack.

But, there’s nothing telling us about how she gained the power to attack people beyond the grave (there are plenty of items in the apartment to indicate some sort of occult but none of that was explained) or

why they feel the need to seek revenge not only on the social worker but people who are connected to her through various cell phone friends lists. Rather than be scared watching this movie, I was more or less bored out of my mind.

For a horror film, this movie had less scares than some kids movies I’ve seen. It’s not one I would recommend unless you plan on pranking one of your friends and calling their cell phone halfway through it.
