When it came time for my best friend and I to take our annual trip to Charlotte, North Carolina for the NASCAR race we knew that we needed to rent a car. My own car has a busted front end that makes it a little interesting to drive and her husband needed their car to drive to work while we were gone. We looked at a number of different rental car places in both our areas, but eventually learned that it was cheaper to rent a car in Dayton, Ohio where I live than her location in West Virginia. We bounced back and forth between several companies and came very close to making a reservation with Enterprise before we learned that their unlimited mileage only applies to a few states and most of our driving would take place in areas they didn’t cover. That led to us choosing Dollar

      Rent a Car.

I have to admit that I don’t have a lot of experience with Dollar except for reading some bad reviews of them online. I’ve always rented from Budget or Enterprise, but I could not pass up on the deals that Dollar had. While their regular cars were already cheaper than other places, they also had a number of local deals for my area. One of those deals was for a Compact car for around $200 for the entire week we’d be gone plus an extra day after I came back. That price was something that I just couldn’t pass up. The website stated that they had a Dodge Caliber or similar and I booked one for our trip.

I arrived at their Dayton location a little surprised to discover that they were so far from the airport. I spotted a number of Dodge products in their parking ...

      • lot, including several of the Caliber models and was pretty excited. Once I started checking in though my excitement died a little. Dollar actually shares the location with Thrifty and the woman tried to convince me that I would be happier with an upgraded car. She pointed out that it would only cost an extra $10 per day, but that price was far higher than it would have been had I booked a bigger car online. She then tried her hardest to convince me that I needed their most expensive insurance package and got a little disgusted when I declined all insurance.

Finally she told me that they had no Calibers left at the location and I would have to get a Ford Focus. I pointed out the ones in the parking lot and she told me that those belonged to Thrifty. They also didn’t have any Chargers in stock

and she said they were changing to the Avenger though their website still lists the Charger at all locations. I found my car in the parking lot and noticed a large dent in the backseat door on the driver’s side as well as a cracked quarter panel on the passenger’s side. Though she said nothing about their smoking policy, I was disappointed to find several stickers inside the car saying you couldn’t smoke there.

On return, the woman didn’t mention the dent or the crack so I assume that she knew they were there when she rented it. The cost of the rental came in a little less than I was quoted at the beginning of the trip. It was a good experience and I’m sure I’ll rent from them again, but I was a little disappointed at how much she tried to up sell me on extra features.
