Camiguin Island is a volcanic island off the coast of Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao. The island can be easily reached by a 45 1 hour ferry ride from the Balingoan Port in Misamis. The island is dotted with numerous hotels and beach resorts along its coast but if you are a budget traveller like me, you can stay in rooms or cottages that the locals rent out. We stayed in one of the cottages in Mambajao.

The cottage we got can accommodate as much as 10 persons. It is fully airconditioned, equipped with cable television and a big, clean bathroom. Attached to the

cottage is a small terrace where everybody can share a drink or two after going around the island the whole day.

An overnight stay will only cost you US$ 29 (off peak) to US$ 48 (peak season). Food is very cheap on the island. The cheapest meal will only cost you about US$ 1.

      50. If you have money to spare, you might want to try out buying fresh seafood from the fishermen along the coast and asking the owner of your lodging to cook it for you. They will gladly do that for a small fee.

To get around the island, it is best to hire ...

      • a jeepney. The drivers act as knowledgeable tourist guides and they can map out the best route to take for you to see the most interesting tourist spots on the island. Camiguin is abound with beautiful places to see.

Our group first went to the sunken cemetery then ended our gallivanting at the Ardent Hot Spring. I would recommend that you make this your last stop to soothe your tired muscles. Don’t forget to see the majestic Katibawasan Falls.

Across the coast of Mambajao is a sandbar called White Island. White Island is reachable by a 15 minute boat ride. Renting a boat is also cheap

        (US $ 10).

The best time to go to the island is early morning when you can see the entire 2 kilometer sandbar. In every stop, there are souvenir shops where you can surely find something for everyone in your family and even your boss. Camiguin is also famous for its pastel (a filled bun).

If you have a sweet tooth, you will enjoy the pastel very much.

If you want to go on a holiday and want to avoid the crowd, Camiguin is the place to go. The people are warm and friendly.

Everything on the island is cheap and will not cause a big dent on your wallets.
