Every so often there’s an episode from the Law and Order franchise that disturbs you and makes you feel uncomfortable. For me that was this episode of Criminal Intent.

The episode starts out calmly enough, with a man trying to raise money, though he doesn’t say what.

      He tries to hide the

fact from his wife and two daughters and leaves them alone while he keeps trying to raise money.

Unfortunately he is shot down at every turn, including by his father-in-law.

When his family disappears, it turns out that he owed a loan shark a significant amount of money and the man is ...

      • now threatening him.

When he can’t come up with the money, the man who kidnapped his family rapes one of his daughters.

Goren and Eames try to get him to let them help, but he refuses because he’s worried about what might happen.

The wife’s mother comes to the police station, but

        they still can’t get involved.

They do learn that he was embezzling from the company and borrowed the money to try and cover his tracks.

Eventually the father-in-law steps up to the plate and gives him the money to pay.

As the family is released, Goren grows more suspicious and refuses to drop the case.
