The Far Pavilions, 1984, mini-series, is based on the novel by M. M. Kaye.

I have one complaint about the movie: several scenes are done in the dark, leaving you to guess what is taking place. Other than that, the movie is good.

The story is about Ashton Pelham-Martyn, or Ashok (Ben Cross), a boy born in the colonial India to British parents and raised by his Indian nurse after his parents and the rest

of the household died of cholera. Fearing for the boy’s life, the nurse went to live to a different part of the country and became a servant at a maharaja’s palace, telling everyone that Ashok was her son.

Ashok befriended Anjuli, the Indian princess shun by others because her mother was half-Russian. Soon both Ashok’s life is endangered again by palace intrigues, so he flees to the British troops.

He presents documents proving his ...

      • birth, after which he is sent off to England to be educated as an Englishman. Years later, Ashok returns to India as Ashton Pelham-Martyn, a British cavalry officer.

He meets a beautiful young lady Belinda and falls in love. However, his commanding officer does not give him permission to marry until he is thirty, and Belinda is not willing to wait that long.

She marries someone else. Time goes by, and Ashton meets Princess

Anjuli again, who at first does not recognized him.

Anjuli’s brother has arranged it for her and her sister to marry an old rich ruler, and Ashton is assigned to accompany them as they travel to their future husband’s place. Ashton remembers his childhood friendship with Anjuli, who has never forgotten him, either, and has been waiting for him to return all these years.

They fall in love, but of course their marriage is out of the question.
