Book Review The Diary of Jack the Ripper Narrative by Shirley Harrison

This was an intriguing book. If you are familiar with the Jack the Ripper case then this book will be of great interest. If you are unfamiliar with the case then maybe you need to read up on it before getting into this diary.

The big problem with the book is that it may not be real.

There are many questions as to exactly where it came from. The publisher has tried to establish the veracity of the diary through paper analysis, ink, analysis, writing style analysis and through other means. Unfortunately, there have been no definitive answers.

That does not take away from the fascination of the book. Those familiar with Jack and his horrid crimes will be drawn in by the narrative by Ms.

      • Harrison. She paints a vivid portrait of the life of the diary as she knew it. We follow the testing’s that the diary goes through. We follow the life and death of the man who is acclaimed to be Jack the Ripper.

The man, who is supposed to have written the diary James Maybrick, has a well known history because his wife murdered him, for reasons not related to

him being a horrible murderer. Within the Ripper community, Maybrick is a controversial choice as Jack the Ripper and that’s another reason why some think the diary is a forgery.

The book contains some interesting photos but adds nothing really new to what we know of Jack the Ripper, except that this just might be his diary and if so we now know who the Ripper is. At long last.
