I recently went on a trout fishing trip, and used the new SpiderWire XXX Super Mono fishing line in 4 pound weight on my ultralight rods. Unfortunately, I did not have a very good experience with this line. From the very beginning, I had a terrible time with it.

I am an experienced fisherman, and have used many different brands and styles of fishing line. This could be the worst line that I have ever used. There are several things that caused me to dislike this line so much.

First, it was difficult to spool on the reel, as it constantly wanted to jump over

the lip of the reel. Several times during the process of transferring the line from the spool to the reel the line looped around the reel itself. This could be expected with a stiffer, heavier line, but with a 4 pound test line, it is ridiculous!

Once I hit the stream, I found that there were some other problems with the line. I could not tie smooth knots with this line, which again is hard to believe considering the fineness of the line. The knots would not draw down tightly, even when lubricated, which seemed to indicate that the line had pits along it,

      • which would catch the line as it was drawn tight. I broke the line off several times while trying to tie on hooks. I also broke off a couple of fish, right at the hook, which indicates a weakness in the line itself as well.

The problem with the line tangling continued throughout the day as well. Several times the line would tangle coming off the line, causing problems with both casting and retrieving. Anyone who has fished shallow, fast moving water knows that a tangle at the reel will almost certainly cause you to hang your tackle on the bottom of the stream.

This happened several times throughout the day.

There is very little to praise about this line. It did cast well when it did not tangle coming off the reel. I could get quite a few casts in before a tangle would occur, so during those periods it worked acceptably. It was also sensitive enough to feel even soft strikes. If the other issues were worked out, these characteristics would be great.

I give this product only a 2 out of 10. I was sorely disappointed with this product, and will not purchase it again. I suggest you avoid it, and spend your money elsewhere!
