The first half of the movie is light hearted romantic comedy. Guido played by Roberto Benigni is a young Italian Jew who comes to Arezzo and sets up a bookstore. He then meets an Dora, Italian woman who is not a Jew. Dora played by Nicoletta Braschian gets closer to Guido and meanwhile he literally steals her from her engagement ceremony and they give birth to a son, Joshua after some years.

      After

some years on Joshua’s fifth birthday he, Guido and Guido’s uncle Eliseo are taken to concentration camp by the Nazis but Dora insists on joining her husband and son and is allowed to do so. To keep up Joshua’s spirits, Guido tells him that the camp is a game and the person who get more points wins a tank. He discourages all the attepts of Joshua to return home by saying that ...

      • they are leading the game. Although there is a lot of cruelty and death around him, Joshua doesn’t question his father of the genuinity of the game both because of the convincing performance by his father and also because of his own innocence.

In the end Guido after convincing his son to hide in a sweatbox till everyone has left and in an attempt to save his wife gets shot by an officer.

Joshua manages to survive and when he gets out of the box he is amused to see the tank approaching and thinks he has won the game and reunites with his mother.

After watching the movie one can feel the water in their eyes and I couldn’t make out till now why I cried. I didn’t know whether I cried for the comedy or emotion or for Guido’s death. May be for them all.
