If you purchase the 30th Anniversary Special Edition DVD of Blazing Saddles, you will find nestled within its handful of special features the pilot episode of the never televised series Black Bart. I was very interested to see this myself, considering that Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies of all time, a television

series based upon the premise and characters should be good.

Unfortunately, I was horribly mistaken. I don’t know how they managed to do it, but Black Bart is an utterly terrible television show. It didn’t take me long at all to figure out why this show never got picked up as a regular series.

      Not only ...

      • is it not funny, it is offensive. Blazing Saddles was able to take a lot of liberties, with a lot of offensive material, and yet still make it seem appropriate and even funny. The same sort of material here, though, just comes off as really ugly and malicious. They just didn’t have the
talent in the writing, the cast or directing of this series to pull it off. Which is really a shame, as Blazing Saddles is such a great movie, and it would be nice to see a TV series of the same idea, but alas the movie must stand on its own (which it does exceedingly well).
