McKinney Hills State Park is 13 miles southeast of Austin off of US Hwy 183. It is a great place to camp if you want to spend time in Austin which is the capitol of Texas. Campsites with water and electric run $16 per night, tent campsites are $12 which is lots cheaper than a hotel! There are a couple of shower houses in the camping area and bathrooms throughout the park. When we were there both the bathrooms and the shower

      house was clean and tidy.

If you enjoy fishing Texas is one of the few states that we have been to that has free fishing within the state park system. You will want to be sure to check if that still applies but while we were there we did not have to purchase an out of state fishing license. We were told that it was to encourage tourism within Texas State Parks.

McKinney Hills State Park is home to Onion Creek, very popular ...

      • with swimmers. There are waterfalls with pools below that entices many swimmers, however swimming is not always allowed, it seems to be open to swimmers on the results of daily ecoli testing.

The hiking is great, there are many trails for both hiker’s and mountain bikers. The overlooks are incredible and the peacefulness is awesome. You can’t believe you are so near to Austin which is a very busy city. There is wildlife throughout the park, we seen armadillo’s and racoon’s

and a whole slew of different birds. We really enjoyed splitting our time between touring Austin and enjoying the great outdoors.

Austin has museum’s, great restaurants and if you enjoy music, Austin’s night-life includes some great blues music.

If you are going to Austin and want to save a little money and have two great vacations in one I would highly recommend staying at McKinney Hills State Park. You will love the natural beauty, hiking, camping and fishing at the state park and you will have fun exploring Austin!
