The Discovery Channel has presented a program called “A Haunting,” in which real people present their real-life ghost stories. These stories are very intriguing, and fairly scary - that is, if you believe in that sort of thing. I happen to believe in many elements of the supernatural.

When I saw the “Hungry Ghosts” episode, I had a different idea about what it was about. The episode opens and the narrator (who has a creepy voice by the way) explains that a father moved his family to a really high-end mansion in Taiwan at the behest of

      his job.

The family fell in love with this high-tech looking white house with lots of glass windows. Everyone seemed to love the place except for the mother, who complained that “someone” pushed her against the back upon stepping through the threshold.

She revealed (in the interview) that there was something about the home that she really didn’t like. She had a bad feeling, but didn’t say anything right away.

After she revealed to her husband that she had these feelings, he suggested that they give the wonderful home a chance. The house was ...

      • really beautiful, and appeared to be fairly isolated.

To make a long story short, the two daughters and the mother had several scary encounters at the house. All of them were afraid to live there.

Finally they called in a Taoist priest to come and bless the house, and provide an exorcism. He claimed that the house was built there illegally after the original property burned down.

All in all, this episode was very frightening to me because of the fact that these events happened to an American family in a foreign country. The idea of

experiencing these strange events in a country where I don’t speak the language makes the whole thing even more scary.

Ultimately, the blessing was said to have worked for about 2 months. The Taoist priest said that the house was trying to kill the family, and he suggested that they leave.

After the oldest daughter left for college, that is exactly what they did. Why they didn’t leave sooner, I’ll never know.

You have to like these kinds of stories in order to see the value in the stories. This one was rather different and very enjoyable.
