The Whale Watching Center is off Hwy 101 in Depoe Bay, OR . It is a wonderful observation area above the seawall with two stories of windows for the best viewing of migrating gray whales. The center has many exhibits on whales, there is one specifically for children that our gang just loved. There is also a free movie theater showing a variety of whale movies. There are bathrooms and a picnic area but no camping facilities.

The best time to whale watch is the last week in December through the first week in

January and March through November. It is rare to see whales from the middle of November to the Middle of December and from the Middle of January to the middle of March.

There were several knowledgeable volunteers who really gave us an education while we were there. They explained the migrating route of the gray whales and pointed out many of the whale’s antics. For instance the breach is a move that takes the whales body 3/4 of the way out of the water, it looks like a twist on one side, it looks both ...

      • powerful and graceful. The spyhop is when a whale pulls his head only out of the water and appears to be having a good look around. The blow is of course the water they blow out of their blowhole, it is done approximately every 45 minutes and it is the best way to locate where the whale are.

Oregon is also home to Humpback, Blue, Sperm and Minke Whales. We were fortunate to see lots of gray whales from the center. If you go be sure and take you’re binoculars and a camera.

If you want a closer look there are several tour companies in Depoe Bay that do group tours by boat.

This was such a special part of our vacation, we all enjoyed watching the whales and learning about their lives. All of us would recommend you visit this place, the whales are so large and beautiful in their own right. It is just such a magnificent view to see a whale breach. If you travel, this would be a great place to visit, maybe bring the family or the grandkids, it is just incredible.
