When people think of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, they naturally think of his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes. But, he actually had another character that could match up to the famous detective.

In reading the book The Adventures of Gerard, I was introduced to a French soldier who served during Napoleon’s conquest of Europe and

rose up through the ranks because of a series of adventures.

Every story in this book is entertaining. They offer a good mix of adventure, some romance and plenty of honor and all are told by the since-retired Gerard in a way where you don’t know whether the stories are true or if he’s just ...

      • making them up. But, you will enjoy hearing how he lost part of his ear saving the honor of a woman he loved or participated in an English Fox Hunt as a way of escaping from behind enemy lines. There’s even a story about how he saved Napoleon from being captured by the British
        at the battle of Waterloo.

What I found amazing about this is how well Doyle, a British author, writes from the French perspective; even going as far as insulting the English and glorifying Napoleon. This is a great book and one I would recommend to anyone; regardless of whether it is something you would be normally interested in.
