There is a place north of Merrill called the Underdown. It is such a versatile spot. You can camp, ride you horse, swim, ATV, bike, hike and whatever. It is way back on a glacial park of Northern Lincoln County.

I have gone horseback riding up there and you can go for hours without crossing the same trail. The trails are challenging and good for training a horse and building muscles. Some of the trails are dirt and then again some are extremely rocky. Make sure you have

shoes on your horse or they will have sore feet. I love to ride back there. The trails are so stimulating there is always something to see. The trails are winding and some of them very steep. Occasionally, you will be crossing small streams and where it is steep sometimes there are washouts. So be careful!!!

There are possibly 12 campsites. About 6 of them are suitable for a truck and horsetrailer or a pull behind camper. There is a concrete block outhouse and a pump well.

      • It campground is way off the beaten path and very few people know about it so, it is a nice place to come.

During the winter I go cross country skiing there. That is a aerobic activity, if you can’t handle that kind of skiing, don’t even try it. You will regret it. There is one spot in the woods called bonsai hill. You can really get some speed on the way down.

The roads out there are always plowed, and it is a safe place

to drive. It is not at the end of some dead end road where if you get lost you won’t be found for weeks.

The name Underdown came from the fact that there was an old moonshiner who hid his still out in the woods. This old moonshiner’s name was William Underdown. I think this must have been in the 1920’s. There is also an old car of Underdown’s somewhere in the woods, left to rust away. Lots of history here and it is a fun place to be.
