Shravanabelagola is a place in Karnataka, India. This is a beautiful place and thronged by visitors. Majority of the visitors are from various parts of India. The most interesting thing in Shravanabelagola is a tall statue, the height of which is more than 150 metres. This statue is sacred to jains, a religious community in India.

The statue was built out of stone 10,000 years ago. The statue is of a saintly man, who is supposed to have gained enlightenment. The statue is nude. The depth of the saint’s meditation and withdrawal from the world is suggested

by the spiraling creepers shown growing up his legs and arms, and by the ant hills and snakes at his feet.

He is shown standing on a lotus. This statue is amazing. One simply cannot understand how it might have been built. It is a marvelous piece of art.

Many people come to see this statue which stands out as the tallest statue in India. There are no other places of interest in Shravanabelagola. But Shravanabelagola is in itself a quiet and secluded place. There is beautiful natural scenery.

The crowd is only around the statue. Once ...

      • you go farther from the statue, you cannot see any crowd. But the drawback in Shravanabelagola is the lack of efficient transport system and the lack of good hotels. Food in the restaurants is rather unclean.

Local buses are not available to many places in and around Shravanabelagola. Moreover, tourism could have been improved in this place because there are so many spots of natural scenery, some of which could be converted into parks. But the place remains wild. An overnight stay is not recommendable.

There are no good hotels to stay and there is not much

to see, except the statue. Shravanabelagola is an ideal place only for those who are interested in the statue. There are no other things which are worthy to see. The statue is the only thing which attracts visitors.

Most of the visitors are religious-minded, because the statue itself is a symbol of religion. The statue is sacred to one of the religious communities of India. One has also to consider the drawbacks of the place before paying a visit. If you cannot adjust to uncleanness, bad roads and transport system, then Shravanabelagola is not an ideal place for you.

        I rate it 5 points.
