When I first heard of Disney’s High School Musical franchise, my first thought was “Not another cheesy teen flick!”, and I was sure I wouldn’t like it.

One evening, I was flicking through channels, to find something decent to watch, when I came across High School Musical 1 playing on the local movie channel. It was either that or a repeat marathon of the TV show Cheers, so I decided to check what all the hype was about.

To my utter surprise, I liked it. They are cheesy, corny, lame,

and yet, very unabashed about it.

It’s a teen film, that centers around the students of East High School.

Troy Bolton is a star basketball player, whose life is completely revolved around Basketball. With pressure coming in from all sides, whether it is his father/coach or his fellow teammates, who count on him to be the best at what he does.

Gabriella Montez is brainy student, who has to move from town to town constantly, and has never stayed in one place for more then a semester. After enrolling at East High, she is befriended by Troy, who is instantly drawn to her.

Their passion for singing, drives them both to audition for the School’s Winter Musical, despite opposition, Troy’s father makes it clear that he doesn’t want his son’s focus shifting from basketball, while Drama Club head, Sharpay isn’t too keen on letting Gabriella and Troy take over her show.

The story is pretty simple, and something told time and again. But what makes High School Musical appealing, is the competent performances of the actors and the addictive songs.

Efron is the extremely likable actor, what with his good looks, great voice, and fantastic dancing skills, makes him perfect casting for the role of Troy.

Vanessa Anne Hudgens is competent, playing the dewy eyed, yet intelligent Gabriella very well. She is a pretty good dancer, and has an amazing voice, undoubtedly the best singer of the all the actors in this enterprise.

Ashley Tisdale is good in the role of the female antagonist Sharpay Evans. Corbin Bleu as Troy’s best friend Chad, does well. Olesya Rulin plays Kelsi Nielsen,

the composer of the Winter Musical, and delivers a good performance.

All other actors, the teens and the adults, have performed well up to the task.

Most of the songs are good compositions and instantly likable.

My favourite of the lots are “Start of Something New”, “Breaking Free” and “We’re All in this Together”.

It’s an entertaining, roller-coaster ride! Don’t look for too much logic in the proceedings, just enjoy the film and sing along to the music.
